Check that microphone access is on in Settings › CantoPass, then speak clearly and close to the device. Your voice is analysed on your device and never recorded or sent anywhere.

Everyone speaks at a different pitch. Calibrating (Tones tab, about five seconds of reading aloud) teaches the app where your own high and low are. Until you do, it can only check the shape of each tone, not whether it's high or low enough.

Six distinct pitches. The traditional count of nine adds three "entering tones" for syllables ending in -p, -t or -k, like 一 jat1 and 食 sik6. They use the same pitches as tones 1, 3 and 6, just cut short, so Jyutping and CantoPass write them with those numbers.

Turn the volume up and check the silent switch or Silent Mode. The Cantonese audio is built into the app, so it works offline.

They show how well a word has stuck. Each review you get right adds a dot, up to five. A miss starts it again, and the word comes back for review sooner.

In the Me tab, under Saved phrases. On iPad they're also in the sidebar.

Yes. On iPad the writing pad works with Apple Pencil, with ink that responds to pressure, and you can rest your palm on the screen. Double-tap the Pencil (or squeeze an Apple Pencil Pro) to undo a stroke. If your finger won't draw, turn off "Only Draw with Apple Pencil" in Settings › Apple Pencil.

With a keyboard attached, number keys choose answers, Return checks or continues, and ⌘Z undoes a stroke when writing.

Tap the ✕ in the top corner, then press and hold the button for three seconds. That keeps little fingers inside Kids mode.

If you're signed in to iCloud, your progress is kept in your iCloud account and comes back when you reinstall or sign in on a new iPhone or iPad.

Go to the Me tab and tap Reset all progress.
