Privacy Policy

CantoPass app · Effective 12 October 2026 · Updated 14 October 2026

The short version

This policy explains how the CantoPass app ("the app") handles information. It applies to the app on iPhone and iPad, and to this website.

Information we collect

None. The app does not collect personal information, and the developer has no servers that receive data from it. The app contains no analytics, advertising or tracking software, and no third-party software development kits.

The microphone

Some exercises ask you to say a word so the app can show your pitch against the target tone. When you first tap the record button, the app asks for permission to use the microphone. The sound is analysed in memory on your device while you speak, to measure its pitch. The audio is not recorded to a file, not kept after the exercise, and never leaves your device. Voice calibration works the same way: only your pitch range (two numbers) is kept, along with your progress below. You can turn microphone access off at any time in Settings › CantoPass; the rest of the app keeps working.

Handwriting

When you practise writing characters with your finger or Apple Pencil, the strokes are scored on your device and discarded when you move on. They are not saved or sent anywhere.

Your learning progress

Your progress (lessons completed, experience points, streak, scores, saved phrases, your voice's pitch range, Kids mode stickers and settings) is saved on your device so the app remembers where you are.

If you are signed in to iCloud, the app also keeps a copy of this progress in your iCloud account using Apple's iCloud key-value storage, so it survives reinstalling the app and appears on your other Apple devices. This copy is stored by Apple under your Apple Account and is governed by Apple's privacy policy. The developer cannot see or access it. You can stop it by turning iCloud off for CantoPass in Settings › [your name] › iCloud, and you can erase your progress at any time with "Reset all progress" in the app's Me tab.

Audio in the app

The Cantonese audio you hear is computer-generated in advance and built into the app. Where none exists for a phrase, the app uses the speech voice built into your device. Neither sends anything you do to anyone.

Purchases

CantoPass Plus (the yearly and monthly subscriptions and the lifetime purchase) is sold and handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. The app only asks Apple, on your device, whether your Apple Account owns Plus. The developer does not receive your name, payment details or other personal information from these purchases. You can manage or cancel a subscription in your Apple Account settings.

Children

The app does not collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13. Kids mode works entirely on the device, has no links out of the app, no purchases and no way to contact anyone.

This website

cantopass.com uses no cookies, analytics or tracking. It is hosted by Netlify, which, like any web host, processes standard technical information such as your IP address to deliver the pages and protect against abuse. See Netlify's privacy policy. If you email us, we use your email only to reply.

Legal basis

Because the app does not collect personal data, the developer does not process personal data through it. Where you contact us by email, we process your email address and message to reply to you, based on our legitimate interest in answering your request (or, in the EU and UK, Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR).

How long we keep information

The developer holds no data from the app. Learning progress stays on your device and in your iCloud account until you reset it in the app, delete the app, or remove it from iCloud. Emails you send us are kept only as long as needed to help you and are then deleted.

Sharing and selling

We do not sell or share personal information, and we do not use it for targeted advertising. This includes "selling" and "sharing" as defined by the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA).

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU and UK, or under California law), you have the right to know what personal data is held about you, to access, correct or delete it, to object to or restrict its use, to data portability, and not to be discriminated against for using these rights. As the app collects nothing, there is normally no data for us to provide. You can delete everything the app stores at any time with "Reset all progress", by deleting the app, and in Settings › [your name] › iCloud. To make a request about an email you sent us, write to info@cantopass.com. You may also complain to your local data protection authority.

International transfers

The app sends no data to the developer. If you email us, your message is handled by our email provider and may be processed in countries other than your own, with appropriate safeguards in place.

Security

Data the app keeps is protected by your device's security and, for iCloud, by Apple's. The website is served only over encrypted HTTPS.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date. If the app ever begins collecting any information, this policy will be updated before that happens.
